Over the past 3 years, Torbay and The Bayside Early learning centre have joined together to create a play based intergenerational program appropriately named ‘Torplay’.
The visits are weekly and during that time, many friendships have formed between residents and children. The look on the residents faces once the children walk through the door is extremely special.
There have been many studies done providing positive results fostering interaction between the elderly residents and children. It’s also an opportunity for the residents to reflect on their early days when they raised their own children and grandchildren. The children also benefit from visiting the ‘Nannies & Poppies’ as some may not have close relations of their own.
This program is especially successful with our residents with dementia. They really warming to the children and take on a parental nurturing role.
We had a lot of fun over the Easter period this year. They children helped the residents make Easter bonnets to show off, and loved participating in the Easter egg hunts.
We are blessed to have this continued dedication from the Day Care centre in our local community and look forward to many more fun years working together.
